| Abstract | The ShoreZone mapping system has been in use since the early 1980s and has been applied to more than 120,000 km of shoreline in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. As of 2018, approximately 94% of the state has ShoreZone imagery and of the area imaged approximately 98% is mapped. This project has been funded by NOAA and a number of other agencies and organizations throughout the years. This standardized system catalogs both geomorphic and biological resources at mapping scales of better than 1:10,000. The high resolution, the attribute-rich dataset is a useful tool for extrapolation of site data over broad spatial ranges for creating a variety of habitat models and oil spill response tools. Low tide, oblique aerial imagery sets this system apart from other mapping efforts. You can "fly the coastline" (aerial video), view and download still photos, and access physical and biological data using our interactive website. Power users can download the entire ShoreZone geodatabase. | ||||

| Abstract | The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries and Aquaculture Department has published an aquaculture photo library where photographs taken by FAO aquaculture officers and consultants working in the field are stored. The main goal of the photo library is to make available to internal and external users photos focusing on global practices of aquaculture. This Web representation is not to be considered as a final static product, but will continuously be revised and updated through inputs provided by the users. This online photo library is especially addressed to extension services, aquaculture research centres and educational institutes that can use the photo library to learn more on aquaculture by means of a visual approach. Users may enquire with the online system what kind of pictures they are looking for, by typing a word on the search box in the home page or by performing an advanced search. The system will lead the user to the result page with small "thumbnail" previews of the pictures that fit the request along with a short caption and basic information as to when and where the picture was taken. By clicking on the thumbnail, the user can access the record of the photo. | ||||

| Abstract | This is the photo gallery of the National Network of Regional Coastal Monitoring Programmes. The Programmes consist of six Regional Monitoring Programmes. For each programme, a Lead Local Authority takes responsibility for funding applications, budget control, data collection, quality control, implementation of the programme and makes sure the programme gets delivered to its partners in the Regional Programme and the Coastal Group. The Programmes collect and distribute the necessary data to underpin evidence-based decisions regarding strategic and local level Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM). Funding for the Programmes is secured in five-year cycles from DEFRA and administrated through the Environment Agency. | ||||

| Abstract | Every 3-hours from 250 miles off the Oregon coast, and 1 mile underwater, HD video streams in live over the Internet through the OOI’s Cabled Array in situ camera system. Live video streams of an actively venting hydrothermal chimney occur during the hours of 2:00, 5:00, 8:00, and 11:00 EDT & PDT day and night, for a duration of 14 minutes. In addition, as of November 2016, the camera now records for 24 hours non-stop on the 10th and 20th of every month, and 72 hours non-stop from the 1st to 3rd of every month, to examine animal behavior, diurnal/tidal cycles, and longer-duration changes in hydrothermal flow. | ||||

| Abstract | A great part of the coral reef resources in the world are in danger of destruction due to over exploitation, degradation of habitat, and, possibly, changes in global climate. Globally, the resulting loss of income from fisheries is estimated to be billions of dollars a year and affects many millions of people. Few figures are available to indicate the sustainable yields that might be extracted for different reef types, current and potential yields of different reef species, how yields are affected by declining reef health and loss of productive capacity and the value of non-extractive uses of reefs (such as tourism). Sophisticated methods to quantify the deterioration of coral reefs have been initiated in some areas, while hardly any assessment or monitoring activities exist in others. Information from these activities is usually published in the primary scientific literature and may not be readily available or understood by a non-technical reader. A larger body of information has been compiled in technical reports, which are generally for limited distribution. This makes it difficult for the people tasked with managing coral reefs to obtain the information needed for good management even when comprehensive information exists. ReefBase gathers available knowledge about coral reefs into one information repository. It is intended to facilitate analyses and monitoring of coral reef health and the quality of life of reef-dependent people and to support informed decisions about coral reef use and management. ReefBase is the official database of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), as well as the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN). The ReefBase Project is housed at the WorldFish Center in Penang, Malaysia, with funding through ICRAN from the United Nations Foundation (UNF). | ||||

| Abstract | Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) are designated to protect habitats and species listed on Annex I and Annex II of the European Habitats Directive. SACs with ‘marine components’ protect Annex I habitats and/or Annex II species associated with the marine environment. Marine component habitats range from coastal, intertidal habitats such as coastal lagoons and mudflats and sandflats, to subtidal and deep-sea habitats such as reefs. There are currently 116 SACs with marine components covering approximately 14% of UK waters. SACs with marine components are displayed on JNCC's MPA mapper, and a list of these sites, the habitats and species they protect, and the site boundaries, is available on JNCC's Resource Hub. | ||||

| Abstract | The Strait of Georgia Data Centre (SGDC) is a collaborative program between the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) and the Fisheries Centre, UBC, to build a secure data archive for marine ecosystem information on the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia, Juan de Fuca Strait and Puget Sound) and more generally in the nearby Pacific Ocean. Subsidiary sites hold metadata and data. Tabs on this site access these subsidiary sites as well as accessing animated oceanographic information. There is an extensive listing of researchers and projects. The PSF Data Centre provides three direct access methods for data. Access method 1 is the simplest method and is set up for those that want manual access to data (viewing and downloading data), while Access method 2 and Access method 3 are for GIS users. See “Data Access” below for detailed instructions. We aim to provide a “one-stop shop” for data. To this end, we provide information on Strait of Georgia data that can be found within this Data Centre, as well as in other existing databases and locations. Clicking on the different categories will allow you information on 1) all the data that is within this SoG Data Centre, 2) links to custodians that can provide other data sets that cannot be directly downloaded from our Data Centre, as well as 3) links to other existing data search engines where data can be immediately downloaded. See “Data Sets” below. We have also developed a map-based video and photograph library. This provides data in the form of historical and current photographs from around the Strait of Georgia, and videos from the First Nations Ecological Knowledge Project and from the Community Perspectives project. The Institute is based within the diverse coastal habitats of British Columbia, Canada. The Hakai Institute represents what happens when the elements of funding, infrastructure, science programs, skilled staff, and partners are integrated into one organization. The Hakai Institute—part of the Tula Foundation—has offices in Quadra Island/Campbell River, Victoria, and Vancouver.
