| Abstract | The Optical Society (OSA) publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed articles in its portfolio of journals, which serve the full breadth of the optics and photonics community. Applied Optics publishes in-depth peer-reviewed content about applications-centered research in optics. These articles cover research in optical technology, photonics, lasers, information processing, sensing and environmental optics. Applied Optics' research articles should: Concentrate on practical applications of science and technology, Introduce new science or technology by either increasing understanding of existing research or reporting novel applications, Include the development and performance of technologies when applying theories, Provide sufficient background, detail, and explanation so that others can reproduce the results, and so that the significance of the work is clear. In addition to original research articles, invited review articles, and comments on published articles, Applied Optics is now publishing Engineering and Laboratory Notes (E&L Notes). E&L Notes are brief articles devoted to the design, analysis, fabrication, integration, alignment, and measurement techniques used when creating optical components and systems. E&L Notes offers a unique way to publish observations from your engineering notebook in Applied Optics. | ||||

| Abstract | Biogeosciences (BG) is a not-for-profit international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and discussion of research articles, short communications, and review papers on all aspects of the interactions between the biological, chemical, and physical processes in terrestrial or extraterrestrial life with the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The objective of the journal is to cut across the boundaries of established sciences and achieve an interdisciplinary view of these interactions. Experimental, conceptual, and modelling approaches are welcome. With the above objective, Biogeosciences covers the following fields: . biodiversity and ecosystem function; . evolutionary ecology; . environmental microbiology; . biogeochemistry and global elemental cycles; . biogeochemistry and gas exchange; . plant–soil interactions; . biomineralization, microbial weathering, and sedimentation; . interactions between microbes, organic matter sediments, and rocks; . biogeophysics; . Earth system sciences and response to global changes; . palaeogeobiology, including origin and evolution of life, evolution of the biosphere, . sedimentary records, and the development and use of proxies; . astrobiology and exobiology. Biogeosciences has an innovative two-stage publication process which involves a scientific discussion forum and exploits the full potential of the Internet to do the following: . foster scientific discussion; . enhance the effectiveness and transparency of scientific quality assurance; . enable rapid publication; . make scientific publications freely accessible. In the first stage, papers that pass a rapid access review by one of the editors are immediately posted on the Biogeosciences Discussions (BGD) website. They are then subject to interactive public discussion, during which the referees' comments (anonymous or attributed), additional short comments by other members of the scientific community (attributed), and the authors' replies are also posted in BGD. In the second stage, the peer-review process is completed and, if accepted, the final revised papers are published in BG. To ensure publication precedence for authors, and to provide a lasting record of scientific discussion, BGD and BG are both ISSN-registered, permanently archived, and fully citable. | ||||

| Abstract | The Boletín de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras is an indexed publication of open access, biannual periodicity and arbitrated under the blind modality. It is aimed at the scientific community and people related to environmental issues in marine-coastal areas, with particular emphasis on tropical America. It considers for publication unpublished works on any topic of research in the sea or in aquatic environments of the coastal zone, carried out in the tropical and subtropical areas of America. The journal has been edited since 1967 by the "José Benito Vives de Andréis" Institute for Marine and Coastal Research (INVEMAR). Until volume 8 it bore the name of Mitteilungen aus dem Colombo-German Institute for Scientific Research Punta de Betín and between volumes 9 and 24, it was called Annals of the Institute for Marine and Coastal Research. As of 2008, two issues have been published per annual volume, a periodicity that has been maintained to date. The first issue is published in the month of June and the second, in the month of December. The Marine and Coastal Research Bulletin receives research articles, review articles and scientific notes on an ongoing basis. It is published in English and Spanish in PDF format. It has a digital version that can be consulted at www.invemar.org.co/boletin and a printed version that is distributed nationally and internationally through the exchange and donation system. The journal has been indexed in Scopus since 2016 (Q4 of the Scimago Journal Ranking in the category “Animal Science and Zoology”) and in Publindex (category B). | ||||

| Abstract | Continental Shelf Research publishes articles dealing with the biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography of the shallow marine environment, from coastal and estuarine waters out to the shelf break. The continental shelf is a critical environment within the land-ocean continuum, and many processes, functions and problems in the continental shelf are driven by terrestrial inputs transported through the rivers and estuaries to the coastal and continental shelf areas. Manuscripts that deal with these topics must make a clear link to the continental shelf. Examples of research areas include: Physical sedimentology and geomorphology, Geochemistry of the coastal ocean (inorganic and organic), Marine environment and anthropogenic effects, Interaction of physical dynamics with natural and manmade shoreline features, Benthic, phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology, Coastal water and sediment quality, and ecosystem health, Benthic-pelagic coupling (physical and biogeochemical), Interactions between physical dynamics (waves, currents, mixing, etc.) and biogeochemical cycles, Estuarine, coastal and shelf sea modelling and process studies, Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary process-oriented contributions, and encouragement is given to the publication of the results of innovative experimental studies with the potential for upscaling and a broad contribution. Regional descriptions and data summaries are discouraged. Continental Shelf Research publishes research papers, occasional review articles and short communications and technical notes (instruments and methods). Continental Shelf Research also publishes Special Issues dedicated to results of large interdisciplinary studies or topical issues on specific subjects. | Abstract | The journal is concerned with fundamental oceanography of the deep sea in the broadest sense. This includes, ocean physics including circulation, waves, turbulence, thermodynamics, optics, acoustics, mixing, or other process studies, atmosphere ocean coupling, primary production, organic carbon fluxes, chemistry, palaeoceanography, geophysics, sedimentology, all aspects of biology from microbes to marine mammals, physiology, ecology, biogeography, evolution, behaviour and anthropological impacts. Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, considers four types of paper: Research Papers: These should report results of original scientific research, including theoretical work of evident oceanographic applicability. To encourage full reporting of complex studies there is no formal length limit on research papers but editors and reviewers will discourage excessive verbosity and repetition. | ||||

| Abstract | Deep-Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography publishes topical issues from the many international and interdisciplinary projects which are undertaken in oceanography. Besides these special issues from projects, the journal publishes collections of papers presented at conferences. The special issues regularly have electronic annexes of non-text material (numerical data, images, images, video, etc.) which are published with the special issues in ScienceDirect. Deep-Sea Research Part II was split off as a separate journal devoted to topical issues in 1993. Its companion journal Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, publishes regular research papers in this area. | ||||

| Abstract | Ecological Modelling publishes new mathematical models and systems analysis for describing ecological processes, and novel applications of models for environmental management. We welcome research on process-based models embedded in theory with explicit causative agents and innovative applications of existing models. And because applications can help refine models and propose new directions for research, the journal publishes both to help foster reproducibility and utility.Human activity and well-being are dependent on and integrated with the functioning of ecosystems and the services they provide. We aim to understand these basic ecosystem functions using mathematical and conceptual modelling, systems analysis, thermodynamics, computer simulations, and ecological theory, and look to a wide spectrum of applications ranging from basic ecology to human ecology to socio-ecological systems. The journal welcomes original research articles, review articles, viewpoint articles and short communications. | ||||

| Abstract | The electronic Journals Delivery Service (eJDS) is a tool that allows scientists at institutions in least developed or low-income countries to access current scientific literature, mainly in the fields of physics and mathematics. The service requires registration and is cost-free. The articles are sent as email attachments so as to reach individual scientists who do not have access to sufficient bandwidth to download material from the Internet in a timely manner and/or cannot afford the connection. eJDS is a programme of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. It is run by the Marie Curie Library, with the participation of leading scientific publishing societies and companies. | ||||

| Abstract | Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) publishes high-impact, innovative, and timely research on major scientific advances in all the major geoscience disciplines. Papers are communications-length articles and should have broad and immediate implications in their discipline or across the geosciences. GRLmaintains the fastest turn-around of all high-impact publications in the geosciences and works closely with authors to ensure broad visibility of top papers. GRL is a Letters journal; limiting manuscript size expedites the review and publication process. GRLalso publishes a limited number of frontier articles, by invitation from Editors. GRL's mission is to disseminate concisely written, high-impact research reports on major scientific advances in AGU disciplines [PDF]. With this goal, the Editorial Board evaluates manuscripts submitted to GRLaccording to the following criteria: High impact innovative results with broad geophysical implications at the forefront of one or several AGU disciplines. Results with immediate impact on the research of others and requiring rapid publication. Instrument or methods manuscript introducing an innovative technique that makes new science advance possible, with immediate applications to AGU disciplines. GRL has been in publication since 1974. The Editors are adapting GRL to the evolving needs of the Earth science community. GRL Editors are topical: the subject of the paper determines which Editor handles the review and decision process. | Abstract | Global Biogeochemical Cycles (GBC) features research on regional to global biogeochemical interactions, as well as more local studies that demonstrate fundamental implications for biogeochemical processing at regional or global scales. Published papers draw on a wide array of methods and knowledge and extend in time from the deep geologic past to recent historical and potential future interactions. This broad scope includes studies that elucidate human activities as interactive components of biogeochemical cycles and physical Earth Systems including climate. Authors are required to make their work accessible to a broad interdisciplinary range of scientists. | ||||

| Abstract | Global Ecology and Biogeography (GEB) welcomes papers that investigate broad-scale (in space, time and/or taxonomy), general patterns in the organization of ecological systems and assemblages, and the processes that underlie them. In particular, GEB welcomes studies that use macroecological methods, comparative analyses, meta-analyses, reviews, spatial analyses and modelling to arrive at general, conceptual conclusions. Studies in GEB need not be global in spatial extent, but the conclusions and implications of the study must be relevant to ecologists and biogeographers globally, rather than being limited to local areas, or specific taxa. Similarly, GEB is not limited to spatial studies; we are equally interested in the general patterns of nature through time, among taxa (e.g., body sizes, dispersal abilities), through the course of evolution, etc. Further, GEB welcomes papers that investigate general impacts of human activities on ecological systems in accordance with the above criteria. Global Ecology and Biogeography generally does not publish studies that focus on unique events or places, or on specific taxa in local areas. The journal is also not interested in studies that lack ecological and/or biogeographical focus. Global Ecology and Biogeography is a sister publication to Journal of Biogeography, and Diversity and Distributions. The three journals have distinct but complementary focus areas within the broad field of biogeography. | ||||

| Abstract | Molecular Ecology publishes papers that utilize molecular genetic techniques to address consequential questions in ecology, evolution, behaviour and conservation. Studies may employ neutral markers for inference about ecological and evolutionary processes or examine ecologically important genes and their products. We also publish articles on technical methods, computer programs and genomic resource development in our companion journal, Molecular Ecology Resources. However, papers that are primarily descriptive and relevant only to the taxon being studied should be submitted to a more specialized journal. Research areas of interest to Molecular Ecology include: ecological, evolutionary, and population genomics; population structure and phylogeography; landscape genomics; community ecology and coevolution; reproductive strategies; relatedness and kin selection; sex allocation; population genetic theory; analytical methods development; conservation genetics; speciation and hybridization; microbial biodiversity; evolutionary dynamics of QTLs; ecological interactions; molecular adaptation and environmental genomics; impact of genetically modified organisms. Molecular Ecology concentrates on primary research articles (i.e., Original Articles and ‘From the Cover’ Papers) but operates a flexible policy regarding other submissions, including Reviews, Syntheses, Opinions, Comments and Meeting Reviews. There are no page charges associated with publication in Molecular Ecology. We typically provide an editorial decision on new submissions within 4 to 8 weeks, and papers usually appear in print 6 to 10 weeks after receipt of the final manuscript. We are consistently working to provide authors with thoughtful, well-reasoned decisions in a prompt and efficient manner. To track the progress of your manuscript, you can visit our Manuscript Central Author Centre and check the status of your submission at any time. | ||||

| Abstract | The main objective of Ocean Modelling is to provide rapid communication between those interested in ocean modeling, whether through direct observation, or through analytical, numerical or laboratory models, and including interactions between physical and biogeochemical or biological phenomena. Because of the intimate links between ocean and atmosphere, the involvement of scientists interested in influences of either medium on the other is welcome. The journal has a wide scope and includes ocean-atmosphere interaction in various forms as well as pure ocean results. In addition to primary peer-reviewed papers, the journal provides review papers, preliminary communications, and discussions. Authors are invited to submit data files, model animations or other electronic-only information in support of their submission. | ||||

| Abstract | Ocean Science (OS) is a not-for-profit international open-access scientific journal dedicated to the publication and discussion of research articles, short communications, and review papers on all aspects of ocean science: experimental, theoretical, and laboratory. The primary objective is to publish a very high-quality scientific journal with free Internet-based access for researchers and other interested people throughout the world. Electronic submission of articles is used to keep publication costs to a minimum. The costs will be covered by a moderate per-page charge paid by the authors. The peer-review process also makes use of the Internet. It includes an 8-week online discussion period with the original submitted manuscript and all comments. If accepted, the final revised paper will be published online. Ocean Science covers the following fields: - ocean physics (i.e. ocean structure, circulation, tides, and internal waves); - ocean chemistry; - biological oceanography; - air–sea interactions; - ocean models – physical, chemical, biological, and biochemical; - coastal and shelf edge processes; - paleooceanography. | ||||

| Abstract | Open Geospatial Data, Software and Standards provides an advanced forum for the science and technology of Open Data, Crowdsourced Geographic Information, Sensor Web and Open Science for Earth Remote Sensing through the publication of reviews, regular research articles as well as software articles. The journal publishes articles that address issues related, but not limited to, the analysis and processing of open geo-data, standardization and interoperability of open geo-data and services, as well as applications based on open geo-data. The journal is also meant to be a space for theories, methods and applications related to crowdsourcing, volunteered geographic information, as well as Sensor Web and related topics. Last but not the least, the journal aims to publish articles that reflect open science tools and methods applied to remote sensing. The relevance of an international journal on Open Geo-Data and Geosensor Web is supported by the fact that open geo-data is not only related to more democracy and transparency in governance, but it is also a means to promote various economic and social opportunities. Today, open geo-data initiatives are part of a majority of countries' policies on improving access to information. In parallel, crowdsourcing is emerging as a new way to gather and disseminate information directly from the field, in a more flexible manner than through traditional data production methods. Meanwhile, Sensor Web creates a new opportunity for members of the public to access information about their environment without relying exclusively on government agencies. All these channels are changing the way people and organizations interact with their environment and contribute to public life. Open Geospatial Data, Software and Standards offers a unique venue where articles related to this topic can be published to provide a comprehensive view. | ||||

| Abstract | Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology (PALO) publishes papers dealing with records of past environments, biota and climate. Understanding of the Earth system as it was in the past requires the employment of a wide range of approaches including marine and lacustrine sedimentology and speleothems; ice sheet formation and flow; stable isotope, trace element, and organic geochemistry; paleontology and molecular paleontology; evolutionary processes; mineralization in organisms; understanding tree-ring formation; seismic stratigraphy; physical, chemical, and biological oceanography; geochemical, climate and earth system modeling, and many others. The scope of this journal is regional to global, rather than local, and includes studies of any geologic age (Precambrian to Quaternary, including modern analogs). Within this framework, papers on the following topics are to be included: chronology, stratigraphy (where relevant to correlation of paleoceanographic events), paleoreconstructions, paleoceanographic modeling, paleocirculation (deep, intermediate, and shallow), paleoclimatology (e.g., paleowinds and cryosphere history), global sediment and geochemical cycles, anoxia, sea level changes and effects, relations between biotic evolution and paleoceanography, biotic crises, paleobiology (e.g., ecology of “microfossils” used in paleoceanography), techniques and approaches in paleoceanographic inferences, and modern paleoceanographic analogs, and quantitative and integrative analysis of coupled ocean-atmosphere-biosphere processes. Paleoceanographic and Paleoclimate studies enable us to use the past in order to gain information on possible future climatic and biotic developments: the past is the key to the future, just as much and maybe more than the present is the key to the past. | ||||

| Abstract | The information system PANGAEA is operated as an Open Access library aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing georeferenced data from earth system research. The system guarantees long-term availability of its content through a commitment of the hosting institutions. Most of the data are freely available and can be used under the terms of the license mentioned on the data set description. A few password protected data sets are under moratorium from ongoing projects. The description of each data set is always visible and includes the principle investigator (PI) who may be asked for access. Each dataset can be identified, shared, published and cited by using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI Name). PANGAEA also allows data to be published as supplements to science articles (example) or as citable data collections in combination with data journals like ESSD, Geoscience Data Journal, Scientific Data, or others. | ||||

| Abstract | The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), is an authoritative source of high-impact, original research that broadly spans the biological, physical, and social sciences. The journal is global in scope and submission is open to all researchers worldwide. PNAS was established in 1914 in honor of the semicentennial anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences. Since then, we have worked to publish only the highest quality scientific research and to make that research accessible to a broad audience. In addition, PNAS publishes science news, Commentaries, Perspectives, Colloquium Papers, podcasts, and profiles of NAS members. In 1995, PNAS began accepting Direct Submissions from researchers without an NAS affiliation. While we retain strong ties with the NAS, whose members oversee the journal’s rigorous three-tier peer review process, we now receive more than 17,000 Direct Submissions each year. Direct Submissions account for more than 75% of the research we publish. PNAS is available by subscription, and all content is free after 6 months. | Abstract | Progress in Oceanography publishes the longer, more comprehensive papers that most oceanographers feel are necessary, on occasion, to do justice to their work. Contributions are generally either a review of an aspect of oceanography or a treatise on an expanding oceanographic subject. The articles cover the entire spectrum of disciplines within the science of oceanography. Occasionally volumes are devoted to collections of papers and conference proceedings of exceptional interest. Essential reading for all oceanographers. | ||||

| Abstract | The SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a publicly available portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains. Journals can be compared or analysed separately. Country rankings may also be compared or analysed separately. Journals can be grouped by subject area (27 major thematic areas), subject category (313 specific subject categories) or by country. Citation data is drawn from over 34,100 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers and country performance metrics from 239 countries worldwide. The SJCR allows you also to embed significative journal metrics into your web as a clickable image widget This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator (PDF), developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™. This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus® database from 1996. SCImago is a research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares, dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualisation techniques. As well as the SJR Portal, SCImago has developed The Shape of Science, the SIR (SCImago Institution Rankings) and the Atlas of Science. The Shape of Science is an information visualization project whose aim is to reveal the structure of science. Its interface has been designed to access the bibliometric indicators database of the SCImago Journal & Country Rank portal. The SIR is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a composite indicator that combines three different sets of indicators based on research performance, innovation outputs and societal impact measured by their web visibility. The Atlas of Science project proposes the creation of an information system whose major aim is to achieve a graphic representation of IberoAmerican Science Research. Such representation is conceived as a collection of interactive maps, allowing navigation functions throughout the semantic spaces formed by the maps. | ||||

| Abstract | Trends in Microbiology provides a multidisciplinary forum for the discussion of all aspects of microbiology: from cell biology and immunology to genetics and evolution, and ranges across virology, bacteriology, protozoology and mycology. Microbiology is, at present, one of the fastest moving disciplines in Life Sciences, thanks also to technological developments of the recent years. The relative ease and rapidity with which small genomes can be entirely sequenced is beginning to have significant impact on all areas of prokaryote biology, from pathogens to extremophiles, and will fuel new developments, for example, in drugs, vaccines and industrial enzyme research. Recent international developments are also responsible for a renewed interest in microbiology. The Table of Contents includes a lively mix of commentary, correspondence and review. Most articles are commissioned and all of them are peer-reviewed. Consequently, they make an authoritative basis for teaching and keeping abreast of developments across the field. The focus is on molecular microbiology and virology, and includes topics such as genomics, the gamut of plant and animal host-pathogen interactions, host immune responses, characterization and evolution of virulence determinants, cell cycle and differentiation, symbiosis in plant and animal associations, environmental microbiology, biodiversity and evolution, population dynamics, sex and mutagenesis, antibiotic resistance and production, drug and vaccine targets, as well as aspects of prion diseases and of fungal and protozoan biology. | ||||

| Abstract | This collection has been created by the editors of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), an open-access online database which holds information on all marine species, and some of their freshwater and terrestrial relatives. The WoRMS database contains species names, synonyms, sources and a range of other information, as described in the overview. The collection complements the database by synthesising current knowledge and understanding about a variety of taxa. Papers can cover any taxonomic level, from a genus to phylum, and any number of species. The scope of individual papers may vary because of the peculiarities of the taxon, available information, and interests of the authors. However, they generally contain information on the history, anatomy and diagnostic features, ecology, biogeography, physiology, and economic importance. | ||||

| Abstract | The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society publishes papers on systematic and evolutionary zoology and comparative, functional and other studies where relevant to these areas. Studies of extinct as well as living animals are included. Reviews are also published; these may be invited by the Editorial Board, but uninvited reviews may also be considered. The Zoological Journal also has a wide circulation amongst zoologists and although narrowly specialized papers are not excluded, potential authors should bear that readership in mind. The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society is published online-only. | ||||
