| Abstract | The Navy, through the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN), is the National Institution whose function is to promote and coordinate Brazil's participation in the activities of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (COI) related to Ocean Services and Ocean Mapping. The National Oceanographic Data Bank (BNDO), in turn, emerged with the approval of the Decree of January 5, 1994 as a Depositary Center of the IOC, to help DHN manage the data under its custody. The Military Organization responsible for the operation of the BNDO is the CHM, and its activities are specified in Article 4 of the aforementioned Decree, namely: - obtain, receive, analyze, verify the coherence of received data, organize, control, archive and disseminate oceanographic data; - maintain oceanographic data exchange with similar national and foreign institutions within the scope of the IOC; - maintain a bibliographic collection of IOC publications and documents, for dissemination to the national scientific community; - coordinate, control and supervise, with the participation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the national programs for obtaining oceanographic data. | ||||

| Abstract | REDMIC (the Canary Islands Integrated Marine Data Repository, acronym in Spanish) is a permanent systematic system for the storage, safeguard and service of marine data, following the philosophy behind OpenData and OpenScience. It was specifically designed for the Canary Islands and, by extension, Macaronesia. However, it has been approached as a pilot project with the intention of reapplying it to other regions and, overtime, using it to manage a public repository as a registry for marine data. REDMIC is different to others in that marine data of whatever kind (maritime transport, oceanography, biodiversity, fisheries, etc.) are introduced in an integrated manner in the same system of geographical information. Therefore, the effort to gather all data is only made once at the beginning, so they can be used and combined as often as necessary with the utmost speed. REDMIC is inspired by the following principles: Exploitability: facilitating the successive use of data. Generavity: storing data by maximising its potential of use. Traceability: providing data related to how the original data were obtained and allowing the knowledge of its modifications. Publicity: publicly funded system for the safeguard, harmonisation and service of data. Versality: allowing for its use as a general repository (all kinds of data) or as an institutional repository (limited to a sort of information or product). | ||||

| Abstract | EMODnet Human Activities aims to facilitate access to existing marine data on activities carried out in EU waters, by building a single entry point for geographic information on 14 different themes. The portal makes available information such as geographical position, spatial extent of a series of activities related to the sea, their temporal variation, time when data was provided, and attributes to indicate the intensity of each activity. The data are aggregated and presented so as to preserve personal privacy and commercially-sensitive information. The data also include a time interval so that historic as well as current activities can be included. The information provided through the portal is collated from a variety of sources, harmonised and made interoperable. Data are free and free of any restrictions, in such a way as to ensure their use from a multitude of stakeholders (policy makers, researchers, students, spatial planners, etc.). | ||||

| Technical notes | The portal is based on free, open-source technology, using both MapServer and OpenLayers. MapServer is used as the geographic data rendering engine. MapServer is designed to render vector and raster data using advanced cartographic output. OpenLayers is a map viewing library that provides a JavaScript API which makes it easy to incorporate maps from a variety of sources into a webpage or application and configure map tools. The portal uses MySQL database technology to hold and serve the GIS data. Web Feature Services will be used to allow request for geographical features across the web using platform-independent calls. | ||||

| Abstract | The compilation of the directory of all ocean-going research vessels worldwide is coordinated by EurOcean. This directory contains characteristics, owners and operator information for marine and oceanographic research vessels, larger than 60 meters. The content format is in conformance to the Oceanic database that was initiated and operated earlier by the University of Delaware. The database is being progressively populated. Annually, EurOcean is approaching all operators that are managing research vessels larger than 60 meters, to validate and to maintain their RV entries. Therefore, on-line functionality is made available that allows identified operators of Research Vessels to edit and to alter their vessel information themselves by a Content Management System. At the same time qualifying operators are invited to contact EurOcean by e-mail, so that their entries will be included. One important aspect of the ocean-going Research Vessel Directory is the use of a unique and consistent vocabulary for Ship codes, which can be used also to establish mutual links between the 3 metadatabases of the POGO CID system. The content governance of this key vocabulary is managed by ICES and BODC. | ||||

| Abstract | The Norwegian government decided in September 2012 to fund the construction of a new research vessel. The vessel was built in Spain, arrived in Bergen on 10 January 2017, and was named by prime minister Erna Solberg in Oslo on 24 March 2017. "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" is the third marine research vessel with this name. The vessel is named after Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), famous for his crossing of Greenland and the "Fram" expedition. Nansen was an oceanographer and professor in zoology. He was also one of the founders of ICES (the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea). In 1922, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts during WW1. The vessel is owned by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), but is manned and operated by IMR. "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen" operates mostly along the west coast of Africa, supporting a number of bilateral science programmes between Norway and West African countries. From 2018, the vessel will also operate in Asia. | ||||

| Abstract | DueSouth is a database of upcoming expeditions to the Southern Ocean. It is a place for you to find planned voyages and the scientists who’ll be aboard, as well as to share your own field plans. It was developed to meet the needs of Southern Ocean researchers, who have repeatedly asked over the years for a tool to help them find out about upcoming voyages, regardless of which nation is organising the cruise. It allows scientists to find potential collaborators as well as opportunities to collect data in parts of the Southern Ocean that their National Antarctic Programme does not visit. DueSouth is an initiative of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), built with the assistance of the Australian Antarctic Data Centre. While we are working with JCOMMOPS, IAATO, and National Antarctic Programmes to arrange for automatic uploads of information, the majority of information in the database is uploaded by members of the Southern Ocean research community, which means that, to make it truly useful, you need to share your field plans. | ||||

| Abstract | The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is a network of organisations supported by the EU’s integrated maritime policy. These organisations work together to observe the sea, process the data according to international standards and make that information freely available as interoperable data layers and data products. EMODnet provides access to European marine data across seven discipline-based themes: Bathymetry, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Human Activities, Physics and Seabed Habitats. For each of these themes, EMODnet has created a gateway to a range of data archives managed by local, national, regional and international organisations. Through these gateways, users have access to standardized observations, data quality indicators and processed data products, such as basin-scale maps. These data products are free to access and use. EMODnet is financed by the European Union under Regulation (EU) No 508/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 May 2014 on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. | ||||

| Technical notes | Metadata services: The EMODnet catalogues and other partner catalogues (IFREMER, etc.) offer the ability to search collections of metadata for data, services and related information objects related to the EMODnet Marine Data. The data catalogues offer a CSW endpoint to other client applications to connect to the service and query the metadata held in the catalogue. CSW GetCapabilities: The mandatory GetCapabilities operation allows CSW clients to retrieve service metadata from a server. The response to a GetCapabilities request shall be an XML document containing service metadata about the server. This subclause specifies the XML document that a CSW server shall return to describe its capabilities. https://www.emodnet.eu/geonetwork/emodnet/eng/csw?service=CSW&request=GetCapabilities&VERSION=2.0.2 CSW GetRecords GetRecords requests allow to query and filter the catalogue metadata records. | Abstract | Currently, the Institute runs a 5 research vessels fleet, between 65 to 14 meters length: Ramón Margalef, Angeles Alvariño, Francisco de P. Navarro, J.Mª. Navaz, and Lura. All of them are equipped with the most modern electronic navigation systems, as well as the appropriate devices to collect water and sediment samples, determinate the physical-chemical variables of seawater, as well as for the biological studies of marine flora and fauna. The activity of these vessels, like the rest of MICINN ones, is coordinated in the framework of the Commission for Coordination and Monitoring of the Activity of Oceanographic Ships (COCSABO) whose secretariat falls to the IEO since its fundation in 2003. | ||||

| Abstract | Two principles govern the scientific community’s access to the ships and associated equipment managed by the French Oceanographic Fleet. The first principle involves the systematic assessment of each request for a research cruise at sea in terms of scientific excellence. Each request is subject to an a priori assessment by scientific assessors convened within an independent national commission. The second principle is a scheduling decision by the fleet’s executive committee which, as far as possible, results in the national equipment being placed at the disposal of the requester for free. In some cases, the owner of the ship may require some financial contribution to cover the cost of the cruise. | ||||

| Abstract | In the field of basic marine research, Germany has a very efficient fleet of research vessels at its disposal. As universal platforms, the vessels facilitate research in all marine science disciplines and in the waters of all oceans. This portal provides a platform for scientists working at publicly funded research institutions (universities, institutions of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, institutions of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association, institutes of the Max Planck Society, and subordinate federal authorities) to submit cruise proposals for the research vessels POLARSTERN, METEOR, SONNE, MARIA S. MERIAN, ALKOR, HEINCKE, and ELISABETH MANN BORGESE. Proposals for secondary use of RV POLARSTERN are accepted also from scientists who are employed at a research institution outside Germany. The decision on which research groups will be allocated access to the research vessels is made in the framework of an evaluation procedure based on scientific criteria. The evaluation of cruise proposals is carried out by a joint evaluation process since autumn 2017. | ||||

| Abstract | OCEANIC - The Ocean Information Center - maintains a searchable database of cruise schedules and ship specifications and contact information. for research vessels around the world. This project has the potential to become a focal point for identifying and locating research platforms, their data gathering efforts and their affiliated efforts worldwide. Modernizing our one-stop-shopping site for Research Vessel specifications and cruise information will allow other programs and institutions to link back to this data and provide a public site for posting their information. Many countries, institutions and/or agencies do not have the in-house resources or access to an IT shop or web expertise that would allow them to post their specifications and cruise information online. Our belief is that by providing users with the web-based tools and framework to enter and maintain this information, the research community, the public and the agencies and entities searching for their information will benefit. We are already a linkback component in the SailWX site's Research Vessels tracking section, with links back to OCEANIC for RV specifications and cruise information. As a proof of concept, similar groupings of RV links have been created for the SAMOS project, the Voluntary Observing Ships program, the NOAA fleet as well as the European RVs and the Baltic RVs for the BONUS portal project. We can also provide similar linkback services and potentially future web services that will remove the need of projects to maintain a subset of RV specification and cruise schedule information. They would be able to simply populate their in-house data holdings directly from our database via web services. The ability to maintain this information in one central data repository and re-use it for multiple purposes can provide substantial time and resource savings for all. OCEANIC would do the work of creating the data entry tools, solicit updated specifications and cruise schedules from vessel operators and work with end-users in the creation of tools and techniques to re-use this information in support of their projects. | ||||

| Abstract | The Cruise Summary Reports metadatabase maintained at OGS-NODC gathers more than 250 entries, the oldest cruise dating from 1909. Most of them have been carried out on board Italian Research Vessels. Some of them have also been reported from scientific joint projects or ship exchange programs with foreign organisations. The inventory aims at facilitating the search on information and data collected during the research cruises. Each cruise is briefly described by the chief scientist(s) with regards to objectives, works carried out, geographical area, location track, bibliographical references. The works cover several disciplines : marine geology, geophysics, physics, chemistry and biology. | ||||

| Abstract | The ship was procured to enhance the capacities of research vessels in Taiwan for oceanography research, a task bequeathed by the Ministry of Science and Technology through NARLabs. To meet the urgent needs of Taiwan for large research vessels, the procurement of this 2000-ton class vessel is expected to fill the current shortage in research vessel capacities and enhance Taiwan’s continuous efforts in ocean exploration and research. Legend is a 2,629-ton research vessel with a crew of 19 that can accommodate up to 24 researchers. She was built in Vietnam by Singapore's Triyards Marine Services (TMS) at a cost of NTD870 million and features a hybrid-electric propulsion system.[9] The ship was officially starting service on May 23, 2018. | ||||

All data is organized on cruises and trips. Either use the schedule, the chronological list of cruises, or the cruises ordered by campaigns to select a specific cruise and trip. For each performed trip a link to the underway data, the stations, research activities and a map of the track is available.

| Abstract | The U.S. Navy’s fleet of oceanographic research vessels traces its history back more than 70 years. Following World War II, the government supported a diversity of academic oceanographic research—and the oceanographic fleet included a hodgepodge of converted wartime vessels: tugboats, minesweepers, subchasers, and escort vessels. In June 1952, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) established a panel to spark the ocean community’s interest in ship design and solicit recommendations for a purpose-built research vessel. ONR also sponsored a conference focusing on oceanographic ships, which generated important characteristics for research vessels and led to a 1955 Navy design study investigating their feasibility. The result was the design for the Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR)-class oceanographic ship, funded in 1960 to support the Navy’s “Ten Year Program in Oceanography”—which called for 20 research ships, including 12 for academic institutions. These latter ships are owned by the Navy but operated by universities or research organizations such as Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Construction on the 283-foot, 1,370-ton research vessel (R/V) Robert D. Conrad (AGOR 3) was completed in 1962, with 11 ships to follow over the next 5 years. However, by 1966 their limitations were recognized. So the AGOR 14 class was designed, incorporating new propulsion concepts for station keeping and maneuverability. Only two ships of this class were built: R/V Melville in 1969 and R/V Knorr in 1970. In 1984 a new Secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations “Navy Policy on Oceanography” included a requirement for replacement of the aging AGOR 3 class. This initiative involved a major overhaul of Melville and Knorr, and design and construction of the AGOR 23 class—with deliveries in 1991 (R/V Thomas G. Thompson), 1996 (R/V Roger Revelle), and 1997 (R/V Atlantis). With the construction and delivery of the Small-Waterplane Area-Twin Hull (SWATH) vessel R/V Kilo Moana in 2002, ONR’s fleet of six research ships was fully modernized. Planning for replacement of the AGOR 14 Class began in 2001, and eventually resulted in the design and construction of the AGOR 27 (R/V Neil Armstrong) and AGOR 28 (R/V Sally Ride), incorporating 21st-century commercial vessel efficiencies and state-of-the-art oceanographic instrumentation. | ||||

| Abstract | The research vessel OGS Explora is the only ocean research vessel with a capacity owned by a public entity currently existing in Italy. OGS has acquired in 1989 and important scientific activities were carried out with it, among which we remember the ten research campaigns in Antarctica, an Arctic campaign at the Svalbard Islands, various campaigns for crustal seismic data acquisition in the Mediterranean and numerous multidisciplinary research projects in the Mediterranean. The ship also served the needs of the offshore industry (exploration for hydrocarbons, deployment of telecommunication cables, etc.) with ad-hoc service contracts. Surveys on behalf of foreign countries were also carried out (projects UNCLOS - United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) in order to collect data for delimiting the extent of the exclusive economic zones (EEZ). The R/V OGS Explora infrastructure is the most complex among those existing in OGS as it involves a wide range of professionals for the management of electronic and mechanical instruments (navigation and positioning, multibeam, multi-channel seismic, gravimetry, magnetometry, samples of the seabed, physical oceanography, marine biology, wet and dry laboratories, analysis and quality control of data), the logistics and maintenance of the naval platform. Management requires the finding of significant financial resources necessary to ensure the efficiency and functionality of the infrastructure. The main objective of the vessel OGS Explora is to enable the geophysical and oceanographic research of the scientists of OGS, of the scientific European and international community. In this context, the collaboration with international researchers, also outside Europe has always been intense, especially in the many Antarctic expeditions. The secondary objective, but that became in recent years a priority for contingent situation, is the service for companies operating offshore, both in the Mediterranean area and in the Atlantic (Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Fær Øer Islands). | ||||

| Abstract | The coastal ocean encompasses the most complex range of oceanic phenomena on the globe, and ships are as vital as ever to observing and understanding these phenomena. Oregon State University is leading the charge in designing and delivering the next generation of ships to advance coastal science. With more modern technology and abilities than previous generations of ocean research ships, these Regional Class Research Vessels (RCRV) will be cutting-edge platforms that provide scientists and educators access to the marine realm. The RCRV's environmentally conscious and acoustically quiet design, robust on-board sensor suite, and advanced overboard-handling systems for the launch and recovery of scientific packages will greatly bolster the U.S. marine science research capacity. The first of three new ships we are building, which CEOAS will operate, will replace R/V Oceanus. | ||||

| Abstract | The cruise inventory is a catalogue of UK research vessel activities dating from 1947 to the present day. Currently, it contains entries for 15942 cruises from 751 individual ships. It also contains details of non-UK marine research activities in British territorial waters. It is a valuable resource for scientists, program managers, and data managers to provide information on who has collected what, where, and when, in addition to details of measurements taken and samples collected. The information is assembled using the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Cruise Summary Report (CSR, formerly ROSCOP) forms. These are completed by the Principal Scientific Officer (PSO) or an appropriate ship's officer for each research cruise or voyage. Forms from UK activities are submitted to the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC). Information on non-UK cruises comes from Notification of Proposed Research Cruise (NPRC) documents submitted to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Whereas CSRs provide a summary of cruise activities, more detailed cruise information is provided in the Cruise Report which is produced in the months following the end of the cruise. | ||||

| Abstract | The Research vessel R/V Argos is owned by the Swedish Board of Fisheries and is Sweden’s largest and only ocean-going research vessel. Argos plays a central role in oceanographic research and scientific fish-related investigations. Argos was built at Kalmar shipyard in 1974. In 1993 it was rebuilt and Argos is now a modern research vessel, over 60 m long and with 12 passenger cabins, making it the largest of its type in Sweden. Research cruises are mainly carried out in the Baltic, the Kattegat, the Skagerrak and the eastern North Sea to survey the size, extent and changes in the fish population. In addition, the oceanography department at SMHI uses the vessel for extensive systematic hydrographic investigations and surveys of the seas surrounding Sweden. Argos is built as a stern trawler and equipped for ocean research, in particular fisheries research and hydrographic investigations. The working deck is equipped for fishing with both the bottom and floating trawls. Trawling is monitored with net probes and a catch control system with spread sensors, opening sensors and catch sensors. The navigation equipment includes Decca, Shipmate, and GPS navigators with video plotters, an ARPA radar (10 cm) and two 3 cm daylight radars. The ship is also equipped with GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) and an Inmarsat-C communication system (International Maritime Organization). The hydrographic equipment consists of a CTD probe that measures salinity (conductivity), temperature, the amount of chlorophyll in the water, turbidity, and oxygen level. Water samples are taken with a Hydro-bios water sampler. The wet lab is well equipped for carrying out numerous chemical analyses of water samples. | ||||

| Abstract | The AIMS research fleet provides access to all of Australia's tropical marine environments. Two large purpose-built ships, the Research Vessel (RV) Cape Ferguson and the RV Solander, and a number of smaller vessels take researchers to the diverse habitats that make up our tropical marine environment. Our major vessels are specially equipped with winches, on-board laboratories, flow-through aquaria and computing facilities. These allow scientists to sample the physical and biological characteristics of various habitats and conduct experiments at sea. Inflatable tenders and on-board compressors support diving operations from the major vessels. | ||||

| Abstract | Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego operates one of the world's largest academic research fleets. R/V Roger Revelle and R/V Sally Ride are operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography under a charter agreement with the Office of Naval Research. These ships are part of six major oceanographic research vessels owned by the U.S. Navy and operated within the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System as shared-use research facilities. The U.S. National Science Foundation provides major support of research vessels at Scripps. The National Science Foundation is the primary U.S. federal agency supporting research at the frontiers of knowledge, across all fields of science and engineering (S&E) and all levels of S&E education. Important support for research vessel operations at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is supported by the National Science Foundation (including awards 1119644, 1212770, 1227624, and 1321002). UNOLS provides a primary forum through which the ocean research and education community, research facility operators and the supporting Federal agencies work cooperatively to improve access, scheduling, operation, and capabilities of current and future academic oceanographic facilities. | ||||

| Abstract | The Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program provides fleet-wide management of underway data to ensure the preservation of, and access to, our national oceanographic research assets. With their global capability and diverse array of sensors, research vessels are essential mobile observing platforms for ocean science. Data collected on every expedition are of high value, given the high cost and increasingly limited resources for ocean exploration. R2R catalogs and submits the underway environmental sensor data routinely acquired on research expeditions to long-term public archives, including the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Data from each cruise are submitted directly to R2R by the vessel operator, rather than by the science party. R2R provides essential documentation and standard products for each expedition, as well as tools to document shipboard data acquisition activities while underway. Post-cruise quality assessment of selected underway data types is provided, designed to evaluate the completeness of data and data documentation and to provide measures of instrument operation. Assessment of underway meteorological data is implemented in near-real-time in partnership with the SAMOS program at FSU. | ||||

RRS Discovery was designed by A.S. Skipsteknisk and was delivered to the National Oceanography Centre on 8 July 2013. Fitted with the most up-to-date and high-tech instruments and equipment, it is ideal for oceanic exploration. With the ability to travel to remote and extreme oceanic environments, RRS Discovery is highly sophisticated and has the ability to operate in high sea states (up to sea-state 6). The ship comes with sub-bottom profiling and multi-beam equipment for mapping the seabed, while her dynamic positioning capability means that Remotely Operated Vehicles can be used. Her wide range of cranes and over-side gantries, with associated winches and wires, will allow many different types of equipment to be deployed from the ship. These facilities and the many more listed below help support the marine science community as it undertakes research of national and global importance.

| Abstract | S/Y Oceania, is a tall ship, owned by the Polish Academy of Sciences, and used as a research vessel. She was built in 1985 in the Gdańsk Shipyard in Poland, after the design of Zygmunt Choreń. The hull was based on plans of earlier tall ships: ORP Iskra II and Pogoria, but its rigging was different. Oceania was originally a full-rigged ship, with three masts (each 32 metres high). On every mast, there was only one sail, in the shape of a vertical rectangle (sometimes Oceania was classified as a frigate), but later the yards and the sail from the mizzen-mast were removed. Sails are raised and driven hydraulically. The ship is equipped with laboratories able to provide hydrographic, optic, acoustic, chemical, biological and particulate experiments and observations. | ||||

| Abstract | The IMOS Ships of Opportunity (SOOP) Facility uses a combination of volunteer commercial and research vessels to collect data relating to physical, chemical and biological oceanography and ecology. As chartered vessels for equipment deployment are expensive and time consuming, the use of volunteer vessels, in addition to equipment especially designed to be deployed efficiently and without the need for high-level technical experience is at the core of the Ships of Opportunity Facility. The use of vessels that undertake continuous transects between ports or regions allow seasonal and annual datasets to be established. The Ships of Opportunity Facility builds upon similar pre-existing programs, expanding to collect a wider variety of data and increasing the number of vessels fitted with the various sampling equipment. The Ships of Opportunity Facility consists of nine different sub-facilities. | ||||

| Abstract | The French Oceanographic Fleet comprises a variety of research ships, underwater devices and manned and autonomous submersibles which provide access to all the world’s oceans and seas, excluding polar regions. These include the following: Six ships which are either deep-sea vessels or positioned overseas (Marion Dufresne, Pourquoi Pas?, L’Atalante, Thalassa, Antea, Alis) and capable of undertaking oceanographic cruises in all oceans (excluding polar regions). Ranging from 30 m to 120 m in length, they have the capacity to: carry out bathymetric surveys of the seabed, deploy deep-water submersible systems in order to collect samples, anchor devices and carry out sampling in water columns, record underway measurements (atmosphere, currents, etc.), and carry out core sampling of sediment (Marion Dufresne holds the world record). Five coastal ships (L’Europe, Thalia, Côtes de la Manche, Tethys II and Haliotis) deployed in the Channel, Atlantic and the Mediterranean for numerous and varied scientific cruises, with the capacity to provide a seamless service from coastal to offshore waters. Seven research station ships, with a mission range of up to three days for the newest, posted along the coasts of mainland France. These are Antedon II (Marseilles), Sepia II (Wimereux), Nereis (Port-Vendres), Neomysis (Roscoff), Albert Lucas (Brest), Planula IV (Arcachon) and Sagitta III (Nice). Deep-water submersible vehicles – the only ones of their kind in Europe – such as the Nautile submarine and the remotely controlled Victor 6000 robot capable of working to a depth of 6,000 metres. Underwater devices for seismic measurements and sampling. Echo sounders, etc. | ||||

| Abstract | INFOMAR (Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s Marine Resource) is a twenty year programme to map the physical, chemical and biological features of Ireland’s seabed. INFOMAR is funded by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE), and delivered by joint management partners Geological Survey Ireland and the Marine Institute. The programme has placed Ireland centre-stage as global leaders in marine stewardship, seabed mapping and development of marine resources. The program delivers a wide range of benefits to multi-sectoral end-users across the national blue economy with an emphasis on enabling our stakeholders. Demonstrated applications for the use of INFOMAR's suite of mapping products include: Shipping & Navigation Renewable Energy Fisheries Management Aquaculture Marine Leisure & Tourism Oil & Gas Exploration Infrastructure Development Environmental Monitoring Coastal Behaviour With the first ten year phase (2006-2016) now complete, we are beginning to see how this knowledge has the potential to offer incredible benefits for the island of Ireland. A range of diverse navigational, environmental, cultural and international legislative obligations must also be addressed. There remains a crucially important body of work to follow in mapping our valuable inshore and offshore waters before the programme completion in 2026. Project Aims: To provide comprehensive and accessible marine datasets for Irish waters that underpin and add value to marine research, SOLAS Convention obligations and government policy. These products will foster growth within the national blue economy, maintain the health and integrity of our natural marine environment while facilitating international collaboration and best practice in the sustainable development of Ireland's marine resource. | ||||

| Abstract | Vessels are arguably the most critical element in any ocean-going venture. Once a ship leaves the safety of its dock, it is an island unto itself on the open seas, its crew at the mercy of the waves. Any ship, from a 15-foot sailboat to a 1,500-foot tanker, must carry all of the food, water, fuel, and equipment that its crew will need to live safely for the duration of the journey. In the case of research vessels, such as those highlighted here, the ships must also be equipped with special tools and technology that allow scientists to explore ocean environments. Research vessels are highly advanced mobile research stations, providing stable platforms from which explorers can deploy equipment, divers, and submersibles. In addition, these vessels carry state-of- the-art electronics, computers, and navigational and communications systems. | ||||
